Ring of Fire

716 109 21-eBack in 2006, when deep-water soloing was starting to become a bit more of a “thing”, I ended up on an exploratory deep-water soloing trip to Croatia’s Kornati Archipelago with some of the world’s best climbers who were prodding and poking the standards — the limits — of the sport. This is Steve McClure making the actual first ascent of Ring of Fire (8b+), on the Holy Grail Wall, Mana Island. It was likely the world’s hardest “deep-water solo” at the time, and soon after the route got a second ascent by Chris Sharma, also on this trip. Obviously it’s hard but with the crux over 10 meters up, the route name gives a clue to what resulted from one unlucky landing… yep, #deepwaterenima Thanks to Monique Forestier for her efforts in the floaty boat to give this shot at least some sense of the height. #goodtimes #throwback
