Just did a quick six-day side-trip to France to photograph at La Calanques and visit our friends Fred Jabot and Nadine Rousselot. The stark white limestone cliffs and craggy Mediterranean coastline makes La Calanques a nice place to climb and potentially good to photograph.

A classic outing: nine easy pitches tackles the left skyline of “La Candle”.
Being so close to Marseilles I’d had the impression most of the crags here would be very accessible. Many are accessible but it is an hours hike to some of the crags we’ve been visiting. Just shows it is an expansive area. It’s a nice hike though with views like this:

For this visit my main photography goal is to photograph one of the long multi-pitch sea level traverse routes that are a unique feature of this area. After some research and recon we’ve decided on the nine pitch La Commune (6b).

Nadine Rousselot and Monique Forestier (belaying) on pitch two of La Commune.

Nadine Rousselot leading the final pitch of La Commune. The route starts from the rocky “beach” in the background, nine pitches earlier! Some quick climbers beta: look for a cave at around pitch five…
