Hong Kong climbing photos   ·  12 August 2009

I’ve added some galleries of my photos of climbing around Hong Kong which you can see here http://www.onsight.com.au/gallery/

I visited Hong Kong twice this year, once as a stop-over en route to Europe and then recently on my way back from China, and had a great time. It’s a pretty cool town, errr city, and was surprised to find so much climbing so close to the city. I love the wilderness settings you get with climbing, but as a photographer visiting here I was interested in the juxtaposition of the cityscape with the action. A bit unusual I think.

Stuart Millis climbing near the city on Peel Street (6b+), Soho Crag, Central, Hong Kong.

For climbers stuck in the city I’d imagine it’s good having this rock so nearby — even if the hike up to Lion Rock was reminiscent of the Ceuse hike, for at least 40 minutes anyway… And for motivated climbers wanting to really get away from the city there are certainly crags around that provide that; such as Tung Lung Chau, an island with good sport climbing, quite popular on weekends, and the basalt columns at Waterfall Rock in the new Territories, which offer moderate trad.

Monique and I found the local climbers to be incredibly friendly and helpful, so if you’re ever in HK for a bit I’d say don’t be too shy, check out Hong Kong Climbing, it’s a good place to get info and it gives a good way to get in touch with the locals.
