dirty rotten…

Greg Child following pitch one of Dirty Rotten Pig (pitches are 19, 19, 17 and 14) at Boars Head, Katoomba Cliffs, in the Blue Mountains.

I’ve got something a bit different for you this week. It’s an on-the-fly photo essay documenting a fun day out on a very cool multi-pitch with a couple of mates. The route is the four pitch classic called Dirty Rotten Pig (hope this email makes it past your spam filter then) and the climbers are Mike Law (“Mikl”) and Greg Child; Australian climbing legends of course and pretty much my two biggest hero’s. Funny buggers too. The climb is awesome but with these two guys the day was more about catching up, the laughs and the stories. I’ve been climbing 35 years now and both Mike and Greg considerably longer; perhaps 115+ years combined climbing experience between us? All pretty relaxed, as you might imagine. Doesn’t get much better. I didn’t want to hold the show up doing photos — we had to actually climb the route — so all of these are quick pics “off the cuff”. We did this climb a while back but I couldn’t post the photos at the time, so it has been really fun digging into the archive, editing these pics for the first time, and remembering the good times. Thanks guys!

Quick announcement! We received two advance copies of the new South East Queensland Climbing (2018 Edition) guidebook from the printers (it looks great!) and, because it will be about three more weeks until we receive the bulk of the books, we are auctioning the two advance copies off and donating the income to the Australian Climbing Association (Queensland). You’ll need to hurry, the auction ends this afternoon (Thursday 9th November) and we’ll be sending the two books out to the winners today. All the info is –> here.

Christmas is coming – don’t you know it! But what I need to tell you is that if your thinking about getting a high-quality photographic print for someone special, then the printers need time so you’ll need to start thinking about getting your order in soon. All the print info and available images are in the PRINT GALLERY HERE, but if you’re after an image that you don’t see there then just contact us. We also have a great CALENDAR, GUIDEBOOKS, the coffee-table book ROCK CLIMBING DOWN UNDER on special, and it’s also available in the deluxe LIMITED EDITION.

Oh I nearly forgot to mention! Great news for our USA friends, the World Climbing Calendar 2018 is now available in the USA via Amazon –> here. That makes ordering and shipping nice and easy (and cheap) for you. Sweet!

Thanks for reading. Climb safe. More soon.

Greg “enjoying” the approach via Devil’s Hole. Not the normal way we’d do it; buy me a beer for the full story.

Mike Law (“Mikl”), soon to be giving Big John’s Resoles some business.

It’s a laugh every 3.5 seconds with these guys.

Game on. Mikl takes on the first pitch with a nice tight rope to start.

If Mikl is feeling sandbagged be has no one to blame but himself. It’s his route!

A master at work.

Greg. Attentive. And not so much…

Greg following pitch one.

3.5 seconds. Pitch one belay. So I drew the straw for pitch two (so no pics) and it’s a beauty!

Out there. Pith two belay. It’s more about the stories than the climbing with these guys.

Yes Greg, it is your lead and it does go there. Oh the pressure! Pitch three.

3.5 seconds.

Mikl following pitch three.

Summit legends. Now that was a fun day out. Thanks guys!
