  • […] Simon Carter is one of the world’s most well-known rock climbing photographers. He has taken many great images of famous climbers and famous routes around the world. In fact, some of his images have made climbs famous because they just look so good. His work is in many ways the benchmark for any budding climbing photographer and it is important to study to see his use of angles and positioning on the wall to show the climber and route at their best. Occasionally I find his work looks a little staged, too often the light is perfect (climbers don’t usually like to climb in the sun, as it reduces friction on the rock) and this reduces my ‘belief’ in the image. However, this is certainly a climber’s perspective and there is no doubt that his images have a general aesthetic appeal through the combination of light, colour, climber’s position and backdrop.
